There is an unbreakable bond connecting the Port of Crotone to the sea and its sacred history. Every year in May, the city comes to a standstill to pay homage to the “Mother of Crotone.” However, 2026 is no ordinary year. It is the year of the Settennale (Septennial), an event held every seven years. During this special occasion, the original Icon of the Black Madonna leaves the Cathedral Basilica to return to her sanctuary on the promontory of Capocolonna, carried on the shoulders of the faithful in a night procession that touches the heart of everyone who witnesses it.
A unique experience for cruise passengers
For those disembarking at the Crotone Cruise Port in May, the atmosphere is electric. The streets are aglow with lights, traditional sounds echo through the alleys of the historic center, and the aroma of local specialties guides visitors on a journey of cultural discovery.
Highlights of the 2026 Program
The Seven-Year Celebration transforms the festival into a spiritual and civic journey of rare beauty. Here are the must-see moments our guests can experience:
- The Night Pilgrimage: On the night between Saturday and Sunday, thousands of faithful walks the 12 kilometers separating the Cathedral from the Capocolonna promontory. Seeing the silhouette of the column of the Temple of Hera Lacinia illuminated by torches is an image that stays with you forever.
- The Return by Sea: One of the most spectacular moments, where faith meets Crotone's maritime heritage. The Icon (in its processional form) returns to the city by sea, escorted by a procession of boats, greeted by fireworks that reflect their colors on the waters of our harbor.
- Tradition in the Square: Concerts, craft markets, and the famous illuminations transform the city center into an open-air stage.
